Spending time outdoors is good for our health and it’s good for the Island too.
The Isle of Wight is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognised for the special relationship between people and nature here. By volunteering in nature, you can help protect that unique environment while learning new skills and meeting like-minded people.
There are lots of ways to get involved. You could join local conservation groups caring for downland and woodland, take part in beach cleans to protect our coastline, help in community gardens, or support wildlife surveys and habitat restoration projects. Opportunities like conservation volunteers, tree planting sessions, litter picks, and practical countryside tasks are regularly advertised on the iwolunteer.org website.
You can also support nature through Citizen Science: helping collect valuable data that supports research and conservation. The Encounter Nature App makes it easy to record what you see when you’re out and about, from butterflies and bees to birds and wildflowers. And it’s FREE!
You can also submit wildlife records through the Isle of Wight Natural History & Archaeological Society at: https://iwnhas.org/recording/
Every record helps build a clearer picture of Island nature and supports organisations working to protect it.
Local organisations such as Natural Enterprise, The National Trust, Planet Aware, Naturezones and The Common Space create opportunities for people to connect with the outdoors through volunteering, learning and wellbeing activities. Whether you have a few hours to spare or want to make a longer commitment, there’s something for everyone.
Taking part in environmental volunteering also links with initiatives such as Green Impact, which encourages practical actions that benefit our environment. Small actions really do add up and every little bit helps.
By volunteering in nature or taking part in Citizen Science, you’re not just giving your time. You’re helping to protect the Island we all love.
