Troop Assistant - 1st Newchurch Scout Group

Section Assistants are adult volunteers who assist the Section Leaders and Assistant Section Leaders in delivering the programme to young people in Scouting.


Scouting is the largest voluntary youth organisation on the Isle of Wight with around 1,000 young people and 400 adult leaders and supporters. 1st Newchurch Scout Group is one of 20+ Scout Groups on the Island as well as a number of Explorer Scout Units (ESUs).

You would need to:

• understand and accept the key policies and processes of The Scout Association

• successfully complete our induction activities, including an enhanced DBS check

• be willing to embark on an exciting adventure In areas where training and support is needed this is provided through The Scout Association’s adult training scheme or through other providers.

• A warm welcome to our friendly but focused team To be a Leader with The Scouts you may need some but not all of the following skills.

Practical skills

• Ability to plan systematically

• Appreciation of the importance of safety and procedures you use to ensure the safety of yourself and others •

Knowledge of first aid and any formal training in this field.

Working as a team:

• Working in a variety of teams e.g. Sections, Groups, County • Supporting others in their role, knowing the value of teamwork

• Valuing others for their skills and abilities and supporting those with additional needs

Management skills:

• Leadership skills, knowing how to lead teams, supervise the group and individuals to get the job done

• Being able to monitor, evaluate, and review performance

• Being able to manage large projects and often large groups of people.


• Being effective in meetings, taking minutes, putting your view across and representing others

• Writing plans, programmes, reports and newsletters.


• Budgeting, keeping accounts

• Securing funding from outside bodies and fundraising.

Availability Details

1st Newchurch Scout Troop currently meets every other week on Friday evenings. Meetings are sometime held in Newport, sometimes elsewhere. There are occasional weekend activities such as camps, County events and competitions.
