Lead Volunteer with 8th Newport Cub Scouts

8th Newport Cub Scouts are looking for an individual to lead and help run their Cub Scouts - a section for 8 to 10.5 year olds.

The Cubs are part of a larger Scout Group which has a Beaver Colony (6 & 7 year olds and a Scout Troop (10.5 to 14 years).

The Cubs meet on Wednesday evenings, 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Camp Hill Community Sports Club, Quarry View, Camp Hill, Newport, PO30 5ZA.

Skills

To be a Leader with The Scouts you may need some but not all of the following skills. In areas where training and support is needed we endevour to provide that through The Scout Association’s adult training scheme or through other providers.

Practical skills

• Ability to plan systematically

• Appreciation of the importance of safety and procedures you use to ensure the safety of yourself and others

• Knowledge of first aid and any formal training in this field.


Working as a team:

• Working in a variety of teams e.g. Sections, Groups, County

• Supporting others in their role, knowing the value of teamwork

• Valuing others for their skills and abilities and supporting those with additional needs


Management skills:

• Leadership skills, knowing how to lead teams, supervise the group and individuals to get the job done

• Being able to monitor, evaluate, and review performance

• Being able to manage large projects and often large groups of people.


Communication

• Being effective in meetings, taking minutes, putting your view across and representing others

• Writing plans, programmes, reports and newsletters.


Finance

• Budgeting, keeping accounts

• Securing funding from outside bodies and fundraising.

Training

Some of the skills listed above you may already have, but some of them you may have gained as part of your role in scouting.

Either way it is important to remember scouting when applying for any position.

You never know when those skills you have picked up and developed in scouting are going to make you stand out in a crowd.
